The Singapore Structural Steel Society has the pleasure in inviting eligible applicants for the 2016 SSSS Structural Steel Excellence Awards. Since 2002, the Steel Awards have recognized steel structural engineering excellence, and rewarded the work of the most talented structural designers/architects and steel fabricators for their indispensable contribution to the built environment. This event was previously held in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014. The objective is to celebrate the excellence of Singapore in the field of steel construction, particularly demonstrating its potential in terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation. The greatest challenge in the coming years for the construction industry is to remain profitable and competitive. For the steel sector, this is the golden opportunity to demonstrate the advantages of steel design and construction.
In order to enter the SSSS Steel Excellence Awards, the project must fulfill the following requirements:
- ACRA registered
- SSSS Member
- SSSS Accredited Fabricator
- Intended project for entry should have been completed or be due for TOP or Architect of Practical Completion between 1st June 2014 to 30th June 2016.
A panel of independent judges who are leading representatives of Architecture, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering and Clients will assess the entries.
For the 2016 SSSS Structural Steel Excellence Awards the committee has decided to invite applicants to submit their award based on the following categories, reflecting the breadth of projects for which structural engineers/architects and steel fabricators are responsible. Some possible categories are as follows:
- Best Use of Steel
- Most Innovative Use of Steel
- Structural Steel Project of the Year
- Outstanding Project of the Year
Points will be awarded to those projects if they exhibit the following key criteria:
Design (50%)
- Architectural and structural excellence
- Efficiency and innovation in the use of steel
- Environment impact and environmentally friendly
- Cost effectiveness
Fabrication & Erection (50%)
- Innovative manufacturing technique
- Practicality in fabrication procedure with respect to material and geometry
- Effective use of manpower during fabrication
- Adaption of good workmanship and skill
- Efficacious erection sequence & procedure
- Minimising impact to the neighbourhood during construction
- Innovative & economical devices for assembly and erection
- Construction quality and safety
Entries should be in Microsoft Word format and submitted via email or CD/DVD. All entries must include the following:
- Cover letter confirming approval from the project owner for the submission; and that, although the copyright remains with the authors, the Singapore Structural Steel Society has the right to retain work for exhibition purposes and to reproduce it for publication, including digitally or via the internet. If the copyright of any images(s) belongs to other parties, this must be clearly stated;
- Official SSSS Steel Excellence Awards 2016 entry form. Entry forms must be fully completed and all terms and conditions of entry strictly adhered to;
- Photographs and drawings with resolution of at least 600 dpi (no more than two images per page).
